Tenentismo (English spelling)

A movement started by a group of innovative young Brazilian officers known as "tenentes" (lieutenants) in the 1920s. It sparked the modernization of Brazil. It was active throughout the 1920s, with events such as the Copacabana uprising in 1922, the São Paulo revolution in 1924, and the "Long March" led by young officer LC Prestes from 1925 to 1927. Many of the young officers participated in GD Vargas' revolution of 1930, which is considered the starting point of modern Brazil, and cooperated with the Vargas government's modernization policies, playing a decisive role in shaking down the old republic (1889-1930) that was dominated by coffee growers.
