Noriaki Uesugi

Japanese: 上杉憲顕 - うえすぎのりあき
Noriaki Uesugi

A military commander during the Nanboku-cho period. He was the son of Uesugi Norifusa and established the Yamanouchi Uesugi clan. As a cousin of Ashikaga Takauji and Tadayoshi, he played an important role within the Ashikaga clan and played an active role in the Nanboku-cho civil war. In 1336 (Engen 1, Kenmu 3), after his father Norifusa died in battle, he succeeded him as head of the family and became the Minister of the Ministry of Public Affairs and the Shugo of Kozuke. He used this base to campaign in the Echigo and Shimotsuke regions. He also held the position of Shugo of Echigo, and appointed his vassal, the Nagao clan, as Shugodai of Kozuke and Echigo. When the conflict between Ashikaga brothers Takauji and Tadayoshi (the Kanno Disturbance) broke out in 50 (Shohei 5, Kanno 1), he fought bravely as part of the Tadayoshi faction in battles such as the Musashino Battle, but was defeated. After that, he engaged in guerilla-style activities against Takauji for 10 years in the border areas of Shinano, Echigo, and Kozuke. After Takauji's death, Ashikaga Motouji, the Kamakura kubo, expelled the Kanto Kanrei Hatakeyama Kunikiyo in 61 (Shohei 16, Koan 1), and in 63 (Shohei 18, Sadaharu 2), installed Noriaki in his position, restoring him to the position of Shugo of Kozuke and Echigo. From then on, he served Motouji and Ujimitsu, laying the foundations for the Kamakura shogunate. He built Kokusei-ji Temple in Izunagoya (Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture) and was buried there. His posthumous name was Kokusei-ji Keizan Dosho.
