A genus of gram-negative rods that are widely distributed in the intestines of humans and animals, in feces, and in sewage. 1.5-4 μm long, 0.5-0.8 μm wide. They have many flagella around them and move actively on solid media, making it difficult for them to form localized colonies, and they form a thin layer of fungal moss over the entire surface of the medium, hence their name, after the shape-shifting Proteus from Greek mythology. Members of the group known as group X share antigens with rickettsiae that cause typhus and scrub typhus, and are therefore used as agglutination antigens in the diagnosis of these diseases (Weil-Felix reaction). → Gram-negative bacteria/rods Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
