Located at the southeastern end of the Bahamas in the West Indies, the Turks Islands (east) and Caicos Islands (west) are British territories. They have an area of 430 km2 and a population of 13,800 (1995). The capital is Cockburn Town. The two islands are separated by the Turks Island Strait, which is 35 km wide. There are more than 30 islands and reefs, but only six of them, including Grand Turk, Salt Cay, Grand Caicos, and Providenciales, are inhabited. The northeast trade winds prevail all year round, making it comfortable to live in, but the area is often damaged by hurricanes.
