It is a member of the Anatidae family and is larger than the common merganser, reaching a total length of 65cm. Males have a green-black head and neck, white and black wings, a black back, a grey waist and tail, and a white chest and abdomen. Females have a brown head and neck and a short crest (→ crest). The back is grey-brown, and the chest and abdomen are white. It is widely distributed from Europe to Central Asia, East Asia, and North America. In Japan, it migrates to lakes and rivers as a winter bird (→ migratory bird), and a small number breed in Hokkaido. The edge of the beak at the joint is serrated, which is characteristic of this species, making it easier to catch fish. (→ Anatidae)
