Robertson, Sir Dennis Holme

Born: 23 October 1890, Low Westft, Norfolk
Died: April 21, 1963. British economist from Cambridge. A great figure in the Cambridge School along with AC Pigou and JM Keynes. He studied at Cambridge University, and served as a lecturer at the university in 1930, a professor at the University of London from 1939 to 1944, a full professor at Cambridge University (emeritus professor in 1957), and president of the Royal Economic Society. At the age of 25, he published A Study of Industrial Fluctuation (15), the first research book on business cycles by an orthodox academic economist in the English-speaking world, and established his position. With the cool-headed eye and passionate policy awareness characteristic of the Cambridge School, he achieved great results in the theory of money, business cycles, and deviation from full employment. His method of process analysis had a great influence on Keynes when he was writing A Treatise on Money, and although the two men later diverged in their theoretical positions, he continued to debate with Keynes throughout his life. In addition to the above, his other works include Money (22), Banking Policy and the Price Level (26), and Lectures on Economic Principles (Vol. 3, 57-58).
