A city on the southern coast of South Gyeongsang Province, Korea. Population 130,201 (1995). Blocked by the wind and waves by Geoje Island and Gadeok Island, Jinhae Bay is a large, deep, and excellent natural harbor. It was purchased by Japan in 1900 and became a naval assembly point during the Russo-Japanese War, and was used as a military port thereafter. Planned urban construction was carried out with radial roads, and today the naval arsenal and naval academy are concentrated here. As the base of the Korean Navy, it has a strong military port character, but there is also industry, such as chemical fertilizers. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
