Chinhae (English spelling)

Japanese: 鎮海 - ちんかい（英語表記）Chinhae

A city on the southern coast of South Gyeongsang Province, Korea. Population 130,201 (1995). Blocked by the wind and waves by Geoje Island and Gadeok Island, Jinhae Bay is a large, deep, and excellent natural harbor. It was purchased by Japan in 1900 and became a naval assembly point during the Russo-Japanese War, and was used as a military port thereafter. Planned urban construction was carried out with radial roads, and today the naval arsenal and naval academy are concentrated here. As the base of the Korean Navy, it has a strong military port character, but there is also industry, such as chemical fertilizers.

韓国，慶尚南道南部海岸の都市。人口13万0201(1995)。巨済島，加徳島によって風波がさえぎられ，面積が広くしかも深い鎮海湾は天然の良港である。1900年日本が買収，日露戦争時には海軍の集結地となり，その後も軍港として使用した。放射線状道路による計画的な都市建設が進められ，今日も海軍工廠，海軍士官学校などが集中している。韓国海軍の根拠地として軍港都市の性格が濃いが，化学肥料などの工業もみられる。
