A city in the northern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It stretches from the western foot of the Aso outer rim to the northern part of the Kumamoto Plain. The central city of Kumamoto, facing the Kikuchi River, became the castle town of Fujiwara Noritaka, who claimed the title of Kikuchi clan in the Middle Ages. It prospered to the point that it was called the Kyoto of Kyushu until the political center was moved to Kumamoto. Rice, livestock, and vegetable cultivation are the main industries, but sericulture and floriculture are also practiced, and the city boasts the largest production of baby's breath in the country. There are also many shiitake mushrooms and other forest products. Industry is being promoted, with companies moving into the Morikita Industrial Park in the south, focusing on transportation equipment and electrical equipment. There are many historical sites of the Kikuchi clan, including Kikuchi Shrine. There are Kikuchi Onsen, developed in 1954, Kikuchi Valley, which is part of the Aso Kuju National Park, and Kikuchi Park, famous for its cherry blossoms and azaleas. In March 2005, Shichijo-cho, Shisui-cho, and Asahi-mura villages in Kikuchi County were incorporated. 276.85km2 . 50,194 people (2010).

熊本県北部の市。1958年市制。阿蘇外輪山西麓から熊本平野北部にまたがる。菊池川に臨む中心市街の隈府(わいふ)は中世藤原則隆が菊池氏を称してのち,その城下町となり,政治の中心が熊本に移るまで九州の京都といわれたほど繁栄した。米作,畜産,野菜栽培を中心に養蚕,花卉(かき)栽培も行われ,カスミソウは全国一の生産量を誇る。シイタケほかの林産物も多い。工業は南部の森北工業団地に企業進出がみられるなど,輸送機器,電機を中心に振興が図られている。菊池神社など菊池氏の史跡に富む。1954年開発の菊池温泉,阿蘇くじゅう国立公園に属する菊池渓谷,桜・ツツジの名所菊池公園などがある。2005年3月菊池郡七城町,泗水町,旭志村を編入。276.85km2。5万194人(2010)。
