This edible octopus (illustration) is a member of the cephalopod family Octopusidae. It is found widely, from the Tohoku region of Japan southward through Asia, the Indian Ocean, Europe, the east coast of America, and Australia, and is the most common species. It is 80 cm long, has an oval body, changes color freely between yellowish brown and blackish brown, and has dark, irregular, net-like spots. It can reach a weight of 3 kg, but males are larger than females. The male's third right arm is a hectocotyl. The spawning season is from late spring to summer, when the water temperature is 15°C or higher, and females join in when their body length reaches 40 cm or more.
