A general term for insects of the Coleoptera family, family Hylecoetidae. Small to medium-sized beetles with cylindrical, slender bodies. The antennae are serrated and consist of 11 segments, arising from both sides of the forehead. The gilllets develop into feather-like structures in males. The legs are slender and not very long. The tarsus has five segments. The basal segments of the fore and middle legs are cone-shaped and protrude. They live in forests, and the larvae bore holes into wood. There are about 50 species in the world, and five species are known in Japan, including the black-spotted ground moth Hylecoetus cossis and the common ground moth Atractocerus niger .
