Autonomous Republic of Adzharia (English spelling)

Japanese: アジャリア[自治共和国]（英語表記）Adzhariya

An autonomous republic occupying the southwestern part of the Republic of Georgia in the Transcaucasus. Under the former Soviet Union, it was the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of Adjara. It has an area of 3,000 km2, a population of 393,000 (1989), and its capital is Batumi. Apart from the coastal plain facing the Black Sea in the west, most of the country is mountainous in the Caucasus Mountains, and it borders Turkey in the south. The Adjar people are a Georgian tribe who converted from Christianity to Islam during the period of Turkish rule in this region (16th to 19th centuries). The main language is Georgian.

ザカフカスのグルジア共和国内の南西部を占める自治共和国。旧ソ連邦のもとではアジャリア自治ソビエト社会主義共和国であった。面積3000km2，人口39万3000(1989)，首都はバトゥーミ。西部の黒海に臨む沿岸平野を除けば，大半がカフカス山系の山岳地帯，南部でトルコと国境を接する。アジャール人はグルジア人の一種族で，この地方のトルコ支配期(16～19世紀)に従来のキリスト教からイスラム化したもの。言語は基本的にグルジア語を保持する。
