An autonomous republic occupying the southwestern part of the Republic of Georgia in the Transcaucasus. Under the former Soviet Union, it was the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of Adjara. It has an area of 3,000 km2, a population of 393,000 (1989), and its capital is Batumi. Apart from the coastal plain facing the Black Sea in the west, most of the country is mountainous in the Caucasus Mountains, and it borders Turkey in the south. The Adjar people are a Georgian tribe who converted from Christianity to Islam during the period of Turkish rule in this region (16th to 19th centuries). The main language is Georgian.
