Vulgar Latin was used in Gaul, which became part of the Roman Empire, i.e. in what is now France. It underwent changes to become modern French. Continental Celtic, the original language of the Gauls (Celts) who were conquered by the Romans, disappeared by the 5th century, but it is thought to have had a considerable influence on Latin as a base language. Phonetically, several important changes occurred between the 4th and 11th centuries, including the weakening of consonants between vowels, the weakening or omission of unstressed vowels, and the change from [u] to [y].
