...corporal punishment (corporal punishment) in which the criminal was hit on the shoulders, back, and buttocks with a broomstick (two pieces of bamboo wrapped in hemp cloth and wrapped with straw, about 58 cm long). Depending on the number of hits, the punishment was divided into 50 hits (light hits) and 100 hits (heavy hits). This was only imposed on commoner men, and did not apply to samurai or monks, and for women, the punishment was changed to katairo (detention in prison)....
