A god called by various names meaning "king" by the ancient Semites, Molech is the name used in the Old Testament. According to the Old Testament, the god's rituals involved child sacrifice, which spread to Israel from the surrounding world, and Kings Ahaz and Manasseh of the Kingdom of Judah sacrificed their children when the nation was in crisis. Yahwehists attacked this ritual practice fiercely and forbade it by law. The name Molech is a derogatory term that combines the Hebrew name of the god, Melech, with the vowel of boshes (shame). In the New Testament, it is written as Moloch. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
