A pidgin English word commonly used in Melanesia in the southwest Pacific, especially in Papua New Guinea, mainly referring to dancing. It is used in a variety of ways: (1) A festival centered on dancing (often accompanied by a feast), usually accompanied by singing, but sometimes with a chorus; (2) A spell, song, chant, or ritual chant; (3) A rocking or swinging motion. In traditional Melanesian society, sing-sing has a more ceremonial than recreational significance. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
