Nishiki Bunryu

Dates of birth and death unknown. A Joruri (puppet theatre), Ukiyo-zoshi author, and Zappai critic in the mid-Edo period. Confirmed to have lived until 1720 (Kyoho 5). Also known as the Yamamura or Shima clan. Pen name Kinchoshi. He lived in Osaka and also in Kyoto for a time, and as a Joruri composer he wrote works such as "Honkaido Toragaishi" (before 1694) and "Keisei Yatsuhanagata" (1703) for the Takemoto-za, Dewa-za, and Toyotake-za theatres, and his style was sensitive to the trends of the times and highly entertaining. His Ukiyo-zoshi works include "Karashi Daimon Yashiki" (1705), "Today's Maiden Weaver" (1706), and "Kumagai's Woman's Woven Hat" (1706), and he was known for his long works based on real events. He was one of the authors who was active around 1700 (Genroku 13) in introducing theatrical elements to Ukiyo-zoshi and riding the trend towards longer works. He was also a zahai judge.

生没年不詳。江戸中期の浄瑠璃(じょうるり)、浮世草子作者、雑俳点者。1720年(享保5)まで生存が確認される。山村氏また島氏とも。号錦頂子(きんちょうし)。大坂また一時期京都に住み、浄瑠璃作者としては竹本座、出羽座、豊竹(とよたけ)座のために、『本海道虎石(ほんかいどうとらがいし)』(1694以前)、『傾城八花形(けいせいやつはながた)』(1703)などの作があり、時流に敏感で娯楽性の強い作風である。浮世草子には『棠大門屋敷(からなしだいもんやしき)』(1705)、『当世乙女織(おとめおり)』(1706)、『熊谷女編笠(くまがいおんなあみがさ)』(1706)などがあり、実際事件を扱った長編作に特色をもち、1700年(元禄13)ごろよりの、浮世草子に演劇色を導入し、長編化する風潮にのって活躍した作者の1人。雑俳点者でもあった。
