Also known as acute tonsillitis or pharyngitis, this condition is characterized by acute inflammation of the palatine tonsils and pharynx, narrowing the airway. The bacteria that cause this condition include beta-hemolytic streptococcus (hemolytic streptococcus), staphylococcus, and pneumonia bacteria, but the most common is simple angina, in which inflammation of the palatine tonsils and the surrounding tissues occurs as a result of a viral infection such as a cold or influenza. Symptoms begin with fever and sore throat, followed by redness and swelling of the tonsils, and in severe cases a grayish-white pseudomembrane forms. If the inflammation spreads to the larynx, it can cause breathing difficulties and complications such as peritonsillitis, nephritis, valvular heart disease, and otitis media. → Tonsillitis → Related topic: Leukocytosis

急性扁桃炎，口峡(こうきょう)炎ともいう。口蓋(こうがい)扁桃や咽頭の急性炎症により，気道がせばめられた状態。原因となる細菌は，β溶血性連鎖球菌（溶連菌），ブドウ球菌，肺炎菌などだが，最も普通にみられるのは単純性アンギーナで，風邪，インフルエンザなどのウイルス感染によって，口蓋扁桃およびその周囲組織に炎症を起こす。症状は発熱，咽頭痛などではじまり，扁桃は発赤，腫脹(しゅちょう)し，ひどくなると灰白色の偽膜(ぎまく)が生じる。炎症が喉頭に及ぶと呼吸困難を生じたり，扁桃周囲炎，腎炎，心臓弁膜症，中耳炎などの合併症を起こすことがある。→扁桃炎
