1772‐1853 French legal scholar and practitioner. Born in Blois in the central north of France, he practiced law before serving as a professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Paris from 1810 to 1830. His major work, Lectures on Commercial Law (1813-17), has earned him recognition as the founder of modern French commercial law. He also made important contributions to the study of medieval maritime law. In particular, he is known for pointing out the universality, uniformity, immutability, and customary origins of maritime law as distinctive features of maritime law compared to civil law, and for setting the stage for the study of maritime law as a distinct field of law.
