Ham Seok Heon - Tantrum

Japanese: 咸錫憲 - かんしゃくけん
Ham Seok Heon - Tantrum
Korean thinker and religious leader. An indomitable independence activist and democratic activist. Born in North Pyongan Province. In 1919, he entered Pyongyang Higher Normal School, but was expelled for participating in the March 1st Independence Movement. In 1921, he entered Osan School, and in 1923, he went on to Tokyo Higher Normal School, and in 1928, he graduated and became a teacher at Osan School. During this time, he met Kanzo Uchimura in Tokyo, who greatly influenced him. While teaching at Osan School, he serialized "History of Korea from a Biblical Perspective" (later revised and expanded and published as "Korean History from a Meaningful Perspective") in the coterie magazine "Bible Korea" as a history textbook on Korean history. In 1938, he was fired from his teaching position for refusing to use Japanese at school, and in 1942, he was imprisoned for a year due to the oppression of "Bible Korea". After liberation, he was active as a religious person in Pyongan Province, but was imprisoned by the Communist government, and escaped to Busan when the Korean War broke out. From the dictatorship of Syngman Rhee through the military dictatorships of Park Chung-hee and Chun Doo-hwan, Ham Seok-heon consistently advocated nonviolent democracy and led the democratization movement, earning him respect as a "revolutionary with soul." Ham Seok-heon continued to explore Eastern and Western thought and religion throughout his life, with a focus on the Bible, and left behind many works. These include The Complete Works of Ham Seok-heon (1993, 20 volumes) and The Collected Works of Ham Seok-heon (2009, 30 volumes).
