Kanazawa Domain

Japanese:
Kanazawa Domain
Also called the Kaga Domain. During the Edo period, this domain ruled over the Kaga Province (Ishikawa Prefecture), Noto Province (Ishikawa Prefecture), and Ecchu Province (Toyama Prefecture). The domain's lord was the outsider Omaeida clan. Throughout the Edo period, it boasted the largest land area of over 1.02 million koku, commonly known as the Kaga Maeda Million Koku. Staff were stationed in the great hall of Edo Castle. Maeda Toshiie was given the Noto Province by Oda Nobunaga, and then Ecchu Province and Kaga Province by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The second lord, Toshinaga, was given the Kaga Province by Tokugawa Ieyasu after the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, and his land area reached 1.2 million koku. The third lord, Toshitsune, divided the Ecchu Toyama Domain (100,000 koku) into Maeda Toshitsugu and the Kaga Daishoji Domain (70,000 koku) into Maeda Toshiharu in 1639, and his land area grew to over 1.02 million koku. The 110 years under the rule of the 3rd lord Toshitsune, the 4th lord Mitsutaka, and the 5th lord Tsunanori were a period in which the foundations of the domain's government were established. Toshitsune's agricultural reform project, known as the Kaisakuho, which he carried out from 1651 to 1656, is particularly famous. Tsunanori, who inherited the results of this project, improved the domain's systems and promoted a policy of civil rule, such as inviting scholars and writers to encourage art and crafts. The domain's finances later reached a deadlock, and under the reign of the 6th lord Yoshinori, Otsuki Denzo was appointed to bolster the finances by linking with commercial capital, but he was ousted by the Kaga Uprising. Under the reign of the 13th lord Nariyasu, reformers including Terashima Kuranobu began to reorganize the finances and set up a product department, but they were unable to complete the task. This continued for 14 generations until the Meiji Restoration, when the domains were abolished and prefectures were established.
