Japanese: 掛踊 - かけおどり

This is a form of dance in which dancing troupes compete with each other at Bon Odori and other festivals. This is characteristic of the Furyuu dance that was popular from the end of the Muromachi period to the early modern period, and records from that time describe how dancers put great effort into their costumes and songs and competed with each other for the most creative style. In places where Furyuu dance was used to ward off epidemics, there was also a form in which the dancers would dance all the way to the border with other villages and send them off in succession, and the Ise dance and Okage dance, which were danced all the way to Ise Shrine, can be said to be variations of this. Kaki dance remains today in the Gujo region of Gifu Prefecture. [Yamaji Kozo]

盆の踊りなどで踊り組が互いに踊りを掛けあい競いあう形態。室町末期から近世初期に流行した風流（ふりゆう）踊に特徴的に見られ，当時の記録類には扮装や歌にくふうを凝らし，趣向を競った様子が記される。また風流踊を疫病送りなどに用いる所では，他村との境まで踊りを掛けて順次送り出す形態もあり，伊勢神宮まで踊り継いだ伊勢踊やお蔭踊はその変型といえる。現在岐阜県郡上（ぐじよう）地方に加喜（かき）踊が残る。【山路興造】
