The former name of the Canadian province of Ontario. It was named after its location on the St. Lawrence River. With the outbreak of the American Revolution, some royalists fled north to the British colonies of Nova Scotia and Quebec. The settlers of Quebec lived around the Great Lakes, but they abhorred the political and economic structure that was heavily influenced by manors and the church. In 1791, with the enactment of the Constitutional Act, Quebec was divided into the colonies of Upper and Lower Canada, and Upper Canada introduced a British-style representative government and land system.
