Nono - Luigi Nono

Nono - Luigi Nono

A representative Italian composer after the Second World War. Born in Venice, he is especially known for being at the intersection of Communist political ideology and contemporary music. While studying law at the University of Padua, he studied under Malipiero at the Venice Conservatory, and later studied under Maderna and Scherchen. Since the premiere of his Variations on a Series by Schoenberg, Op. 41 in Darmstadt, Germany in 1950, he has become known as a representative composer of postwar avant-garde music. Like his contemporary Boulez, many of his works use post-Webern series techniques, but the way he handles the lyrics conveys an Italian lyricism. Her representative works include Interrupted Song (1955-56) for soloist, chorus and orchestra, the opera Intolleranza (1960-61), Like Waves of Force and Light (1971) for soprano, piano and orchestra, the string quartet Fragment - Silence, Diotimae (1979), Prometeo (1983), based on the story of Prometheus from Greek mythology, There is No Way Forward, But We Must Go (1987), dedicated to the Russian film director Tarkovsky, and A Tombstone for Stefan (1989) for guitar and ensemble.
