All the rivers on earth, said to number 3,000, were the sons of the male god Oceanus and his sister, the water goddess Tēthys, and the 3,000 water spirits called the Oceanides were considered to be his sisters. The nature of the river gods, who were considered to be sources of fertility but also lustful and capable of free transformation, is particularly well expressed in the myths about Achelōos, said to be the eldest brother of the river gods. …
