RQ - Respiratory quotient

RQ - Respiratory quotient
Abbreviation for respiratory quotient. It is the ratio of carbon dioxide gas [CO 2 ] to oxygen gas [O 2 ] consumed during respiration. This ratio is not a weight ratio but a volume ratio, i.e., the ratio of the number of molecules. Therefore, in the ideal respiratory decomposition reaction of sugars (carbohydrates), C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6H 2 O + 6O 2 → 6CO 2 + 12H 2 O, RQ = [CO 2 ]/[O 2 ] = 1.0. In the oxidative decomposition of lipids and proteins, RQ is < 1 (usually 0.7 to 0.8). Therefore, by measuring the O 2 consumed and CO 2 excreted by an animal, it is possible to estimate whether it is mainly carbohydrates that are being burned in the body during respiration at that time.
