RQ - Respiratory quotient

Abbreviation for respiratory quotient. It is the ratio of carbon dioxide gas [CO ₂ ] to oxygen gas [O ₂ ] consumed during respiration. This ratio is not a weight ratio but a volume ratio, i.e., the ratio of the number of molecules. Therefore, in the ideal respiratory decomposition reaction of sugars (carbohydrates), C ₆ H ₁₂ O ₆ + 6H ₂ O + 6O ₂ → 6CO ₂ + 12H ₂ O, RQ = [CO ₂ ]/[O ₂ ] = 1.0. In the oxidative decomposition of lipids and proteins, RQ is < 1 (usually 0.7 to 0.8). Therefore, by measuring the O ₂ consumed and CO ₂ excreted by an animal, it is possible to estimate whether it is mainly carbohydrates that are being burned in the body during respiration at that time.

呼吸商の略号。呼吸の際の消費酸素ガス [O₂] あたりの炭酸ガス [CO₂] の量比をいう。この量比は重量比ではなく，体積比すなわち分子数の比で示すので，糖質 (炭水化物) の理想的な呼吸による分解反応 C₆H₁₂O₆＋6H₂O＋6O₂→6CO₂＋12H₂O においては，RQ＝[CO₂]/[O₂]＝1.0 となる。脂質や蛋白質の酸化的分解では RQ＜1 (多くは 0.7～0.8) である。それゆえ動物の消費 O₂ と排出 CO₂ を測定して，そのとき体内で呼吸により燃焼しているのが主として炭水化物か否かを見積ることができる。
