A city in northern Niigata Prefecture, at the northern end of the Echigo Plain. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central city area developed as a castle town for the Naito clan, and still retains its original layout. The Nihonkai Tohoku Expressway and the Uetsu Main Line run through the city. The city is known for its specialty lacquerware, which was encouraged by the feudal domain, salmon from the Miomote River, and the northernmost commercial cultivation area of Murakami tea. The food and electrical equipment industries account for more than 70% of the city's total in terms of both the value of manufactured goods shipped and the number of employees (2003). Senami Onsen and Iwafune Port are located on the Japan Coast, and the area around Iwafune Shrine is the site of Iwafune Fortress. In April 2008, Arakawa Town, Kanbayashi Village, Asahi Village, and Yamakita Town from Iwafune County were incorporated into the city. Area: 1,174.26 km2 . Population: 66,427 (2010).
