A village in Kitaazumi District, northwest of Nagano Prefecture. It borders Toyama Prefecture with the Hida Mountains to the west, and is part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, with a series of 3000m-class mountains such as Mt. Hakuba (2932m), known for its alpine plants and large snowfields, and Mt. Yarigatake (2903m), known for its hot springs at high altitudes. The Hime River flows north through the center of the village, and the JR Oito Line and National Route 148 run along the flat land along the river, while National Route 406 crosses the Chikuma Mountains to the east. The village is located along the Fossa Magna, and a large earthquake occurred in November 2014. Tourism is thriving in the winter, with heavy snowfall and large ski resorts at Mt. Iwatake, Happo-one, and Tono-one, which are crowded with many skiers.
