Serie - Serie (English spelling) French

A musical term. It refers to the twelve-tone sequence (Zwölftonreihe, German, série dodécaphonique, French), which was established as the basic form of twelve-tone music or twelve-tone technique. It is a sequence of 12 tones, which divide an octave into 12 equal parts, arranged without omission or duplication in order to treat each tone equally, and no tone is used again until all 11 tones have appeared. The sequence thus created regulates the order of the tones and plays a role similar to that of a theme in traditional tonal music, as it appears repeatedly throughout the piece. However, each tone can be of any octave. In addition, various transformations of the original tone sequence are made to avoid the monotony that occurs when the same tone sequence is repeated. Transformations include transposition, which moves the original tone to a different pitch, anti-transition, which moves the tones up and down in exactly the opposite order, anti-transition, which reverses the order of the original tone sequence, and anti-transition, which combines the latter two.

When twelve-tone music was first established, series only applied to pitch, but the concept was gradually expanded to include chords, rhythm, and even tone color and dynamics, leading to musique seriale.
