...The Vegetable Garden, called the Misono, was managed by Kengyo-shiki (Inspector) and Sokan-shiki (General Officer). The Vegetable Garden was thought to have included cucumber, lotus root, bamboo shoots, natto, konnyaku, karako, and somen. Its origins are thought to have been in the Garden and Pond Office (Sonoto), which was in charge of vegetables and fruits, and the Daizen-shiki (Zenbu), which was in charge of sweets, rice cakes, and other common foods, in the Imperial Household Ministry under the Ritsuryo system. The Nori clan, who served as the head of the Mizushidokoro for generations, played a major role in arranging the status of offerings. In the late 12th century, they succeeded in preparing daily offerings using the trade share of the "official offerings from the capital and countryside," and in 1274 (Bun'ei 11) they obtained a letter from the Kuranosho stating that "all those who traded fish, birds, and vegetarian sweets south of Sanjo" should be treated as offerings from the Mizushidokoro. *Some of the terminology that refers to "Kara Natto Kuonin" is listed below.
