Bunnoshin Tamaki - Bunnoshin Tamaki

A samurai of the Choshu Domain. The third son of Sugi Shichibei, he later inherited the Tamaki family. He was the younger brother of Sugi Yurinosuke, the father of Yoshida Shoin. In 1842 (Tenpo 13), he founded the Shoka Sonjuku Academy, where he taught Yoshida Shoin, Sugi Tamiji, Shishido Tamaki, and others. He later became the head lecturer at the Meirinkan domain school, and also served as a magistrate in various counties, devoting himself to civil administration. After retiring, he re-established the Shoka Sonjuku Academy and devoted himself to education, but he committed suicide, feeling responsible for his family and children taking part in the Maebara Issei Rebellion in 1876 (Meiji 9).

長州藩士。杉七兵衛の三男で、のち玉木家を継いだ。吉田松陰(しょういん)の父杉百合之助(ゆりのすけ)の弟。1842年（天保13）に松下村塾(しょうかそんじゅく)をおこし、吉田松陰、杉民治、宍戸璣(ししどたまき)らを教育した。その後、藩校明倫館の都講となり、さらに諸郡の代官を歴任して民政にも力を尽くした。隠居後、松下村塾を再興して教育に従事したが、76年（明治9）の前原一誠(いっせい)の乱に一族および子弟の加わったことに責任を感じて自刃した。
