…American musical (stage and film) choreographer and film director. In 1930, he was invited from Broadway to Hollywood, where he choreographed Mary Pickford's only musical, Kiki (1931). In Warner Brothers' revue films, such as 42nd Street (1933) and the Gold Diggers series (1934-36), he expanded the space beyond the limitations of the stage, making free use of cameras mounted on monorails and cranes, and in particular his bird's-eye view shots from directly above (top) are called "Berkeley top shots." His original and bold camerawork, which filmed scenes of chorus girls dancing like geometric patterns or kaleidoscopes, creating gorgeous and rhythmic scenes, is considered to be the groundbreaking film technique that produced the most visually effective results in the history of musical films. …
