An agricultural and pastoral people who live in the mountainous highlands of Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Regions. Currently, the main areas of distribution are the Yi Autonomous Prefectures of Liangshan (Sichuan), Chuxiong (Yunnan), and Honghe (Yunnan), as well as over 10 other Yi Autonomous Counties. The Liangshan region is a large settlement area, and has little contact with the surrounding ethnic groups, so it has maintained a relatively pure form. The name Yi (Yi) is a unified ethnic name adopted after the establishment of the People's Republic of China, and was previously called Luo Luo, Nian Zhong, Yi Jia, and Manzi by the Han Chinese. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Nira" are listed below.
