Law consciousness

Japanese: 法意識 - ほういしき（英語表記）law‐consciousness

The term "legal consciousness" refers comprehensively to the knowledge, opinions, thoughts, beliefs, feelings, emotions, attitudes, representations, and concepts that people have about the law, but is usually used with a wide range of meanings. However, the term can be broadly divided into two meanings: (1) those related to the content of legal norms and legal systems. This can be further divided into those that express knowledge about the norms and systems of current positive law (or awareness of them in a specific situation), and those that refer to feelings and opinions of support or antipathy toward them, as well as the content of legal norms that people consider desirable rather than the current ones.

〈法意識〉ということばは，人が法について持っている知識，意見，思想，信念，感覚，感情，態度，表象，観念などを包括的に指すことばであるが，通常きわめて多義的に用いられる。しかし，その語義は大きく二つに分けることができる。(1)法規範や法制度の内容に関わるもの。これは，さらに現行の実定法の規範や制度についての知識(または，特定の状況におけるそれの自覚)を表すものと，それらに対する支持とか反感とかの感情や意見，さらには現行のものではなく，人が望ましいと考える法規範の内容を指すものとに分けられる。
