A marine fish of the family Labridae in the order Perciformes. Total length is about 30 cm. The body is strongly compressed laterally, has a high body height, and the first and second spines of the dorsal fin are separated from the third spine. Two canines protrude from the tip of each jaw. The body is a beautiful purple-red color with four deep red horizontal bands and a blue-black spot near the dorsal edge above the pectoral fin. It is a coastal fish. It is found from central Honshu in Japan to the East Indies.
