Ethnomethodology - ethnomethodology

A trend in modern sociology. This term, which means "the way of the people," was coined by the American sociologist Garfinkel in 1954, following the words ethnomedicine and ethnobotany. Initially, ethnomethodology was discussed in accordance with Garfinkel, but today various research trends can be seen under this name.

The task of ethnomethodology is to elucidate what is self-evident by focusing on the everyday activities and common sense activities of people who live their lives. Goldner called ethnomethodology "sociology as happening" and Garfinkel an "ethnographer who deals with folkways." Garfinkel conducted case studies using experimental methods, probing the foundations and background of everyday life, and opening up new horizons in the study of social order. Today, the research achievements of ethnomethodology are attracting attention both as a perspective in sociology and as a unique method of research.

Garfinkel has learned a lot from the work of Parsons, Schutz, Husserl, and others. Although he focuses on Parsons in terms of the study of social order, his approach is significantly different from Parsons's. People make meaning of and order reality together in everyday life situations, and through interaction and communication, they determine situations and constantly construct reality. Garfinkel learned a lot from Schutz and Husserl in terms of their approach to the world of everyday life, common sense activities, reality, and self-evident things. Ethnomethodology is sometimes seen as part of various trends in phenomenological sociology.

People who live have skills, methods, and wisdom for living. How to handle and solve problems, and how to explain and interpret events are all related to common sense, but ethnomethodology has investigated such common sense, tacit understandings between people, and self-evident things through a variety of case studies, including conversation analysis. Furthermore, in ethnomethodology, humans are the agents of meaning-giving activities and reality-construction, and attempts to explore the everydayness of the world and reality from the perspective of people who live it.

現代社会学の一潮流。「人々の方法」を意味するこのことばは、ethnomedicineやethnobotanyなどということばに倣って、1954年アメリカの社会学者ガーフィンケルによって使用された。当初はガーフィンケルに即してエスノメソドロジーが論じられたが、今日ではこの名のもとにさまざまな研究の動向がみられる。

　エスノメソドロジーの課題は、生活する人々の日常的営為と常識的諸活動に注目して、自明性を解明するところにある。ゴールドナーはエスノメソドロジーを「ハプニングとしての社会学」とよび、ガーフィンケルを「習俗folkwaysを扱うエスノグラファー（民族誌学者）」と称したが、ガーフィンケルは実験行為という手法を用いて事例研究を行い、日常生活の基盤と背景にメスを入れ、社会秩序の研究においても新たな地平を開いた。今日、エスノメソドロジーの研究業績は、社会学の一パースペクティブ（ものの見方）としても、調査研究の独自の手法としても注目されている。

　ガーフィンケルはパーソンズ、シュッツ、フッサールなどの業績に多くを学んでいる。社会秩序の研究という点で彼はパーソンズに注目しているが、そのアプローチはパーソンズとは著しく異なる。人々は日常生活の場面で現実の意味づけや秩序づけをいっしょになって行い、また、相互行為やコミュニケーションを通じて、状況を規定し、絶え間なしに現実を構成しているのである。日常生活の世界、常識的活動、現実、自明性などへのアプローチという点で、ガーフィンケルはシュッツやフッサールなどに学ぶところがあった。エスノメソドロジーを現象学的社会学phenomenological sociologyのさまざまな動向の一環をなすものとしてみる場合もある。

　生活する人々には暮らしの技術と方法、生活の知恵がある。問題の扱い方や解決の仕方、できごとの説明の仕方や解釈の仕方はいずれも常識にかかわることだが、エスノメソドロジーでは、会話分析をはじめ多様な事例研究を通じて、こうした常識、人々の間での暗黙の了解事項、自明性などの究明が行われてきたのである。またエスノメソドロジーでは、人間は意味付与の活動と現実構成の主体であり、生活者の視点から世界と現実の日常性の探究が試みられているのである。
