Square thread - Kakuneji (English spelling)

Japanese: 角ねじ - かくねじ（英語表記）square thread

A screw whose cross-sectional shape is a square or a rectangle close to a square. It is also called a square screw. It is a dynamic (power) screw used when the direction of the applied axial load changes, and is highly efficient, but difficult to machine and not suitable for high precision. It was used in screw presses, jacks, and lead screws for large lathes, but is rarely used today.

ねじ山の断面形状が正方形またはそれに近い長方形をしたねじ。四角ねじともいう。作用する軸荷重の方向が変る場合に用いられる運動用 (伝動用) ねじで，効率は高いが，工作が困難で，精度のよいものには適さない。ねじプレス，ジャッキ，大型旋盤の親ねじなどに使用されたが，現在ではほとんど使われなくなっている。
