Shishigashira - Shishigashira

Japanese: シシガシラ - ししがしら
Shishigashira - Shishigashira
A perennial herb of the Leptolepis family, endemic to Japan, commonly found under forests in low mountainous areas (illustration). The leaves spread out in all directions, resembling a lion's mane, gave it its Japanese name. Evergreen. The rhizome is thick and clumpy, growing obliquely upwards. The leaves grow in fascicles, forming two forms, and the base of the petiole is densely covered with linear, thin, pointed brown scales. The vegetative leaves have short stalks, are oblanceolate, have a pointed tip like a tail, are simple pinnate, and the pinnae are linear entire, blunt or acute, and are wide at the base and attached to the central axis. The veins are free.
