1918‐1998 Russian author. Born in Kupyansk, Kharkov Oblast. He graduated from Moscow Law School in 1940 and was drafted into the Red Army. He was wounded during the Battle of Leningrad during World War II and served in the Siberian military prosecutor's office. He began writing in 1933 and wrote mainly reportage as a reporter for the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda from 1946 to 1951. He published a collection of short stories, Under the Seven Brave Men, in 1952, but it was with the publication of his novel, Not by Bread Alone, in 1956 that he suddenly became known in the Soviet literary world.
