Russian author. Born in Kupyansk, Kharkov Oblast. He graduated from Moscow Law School in 1940 and was drafted into the Red Army. He was wounded during the Battle of Leningrad during World War II and served in the Siberian military prosecutor's office. He began writing in 1933 and wrote mainly reportage as a reporter for the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda from 1946 to 1951. He published a collection of short stories, Under the Seven Brave Men, in 1952, but it was with the publication of his novel, Not by Bread Alone, in 1956 that he suddenly became known in the Soviet literary world.

ロシアの作家。ハリコフ州クピャンスクの出身。1940年モスクワの法科大学を卒業すると同時に赤軍に召集された。第2次世界大戦中のレニングラード攻防戦で負傷し，シベリアの軍検察局に勤務した。これより先の1933年から文筆活動を始め，46年から51年にかけて《コムソモールスカヤ･プラウダ》紙の記者として主としてルポルタージュを書いた。52年に短編集《七人の勇士のもとで》を発表しているが，彼が一躍ソ連文壇に知られるようになったのは56年に長編《パンのみによるにあらず》を発表してからである。
