Sudate

Japanese:
Sudate

A fixed fishing tool, a type of fishing net. Split bamboo or pieces of wood are used to weave the net, which is then stretched over stakes, creating a complex maze. Fish enter the net during high tide, and are unable to escape when the tide goes out. They then hide in the remaining water or in the seaweed that has flowed in, and are then caught by hand or with a dip net.

Because the structure of the nets is weak, they are set up near the shores of rivers, lakes, and inland bays where the water is shallow and the waves are calm. Carp and crucian carp are caught in freshwater areas such as rivers and lakes, while sea bass, goby, rockfish, sea bitterling, mullet, conger eel, and black porgy are caught in inland bays. The fishing season runs from April to December, with the peak season being June to August. There are also tourist nets that allow tourists to catch fish with their bare hands and then prepare them into tempura and other dishes to eat.
