Negative contrast agent

The conditions for a contrast agent are: (1) a large difference in X-ray absorption with the surrounding tissue, (2) no toxicity and few side effects, (3) rapid excretion and absorption after the examination, and (4) easy to swallow if taken orally. Contrast agents are broadly divided into positive contrast agents, which have high X-ray absorption, and negative contrast agents, which are easily transmitted.

These are substances with a high atomic number that X-rays penetrate less easily than the surrounding tissue, such as barium sulfate and iodine.
