…The Moravian Gate has long been a key trade route connecting north and south Europe. Silesia is divided into Lower Silesia, centered on the ancient large city of Wrocław (population 642,900, 1995), and Upper Silesia, centered on Opole (130,600) and Katowice (355,100). The former consists of the fertile plains of the middle reaches of the Oder River and the northern slopes of the Sudetes, and is a grain-producing region producing potatoes, wheat, barley, beets, etc., and livestock farming is also thriving.
