Upper Silesian Industrial Area

...Industrialization proceeded rapidly, taking advantage of abundant underground resources such as coal, iron ore, and zinc, and various metal and mechanical industries developed. A group of heavy chemical industrial cities called the Upper Silesian Industrial Region (GOP) was formed, and it plays a role as the core of Polish industry. In addition to the three cities mentioned above, the main cities of the two Silesias include Sosnowiec (250,000), Gliwice (210,000), Zabrze (200,000), Walbrzych, and Zielona Góra (110,000).
