An old town in Koka County in southern Shiga Prefecture. It occupies the mountainous area in the upper reaches of the Daido River. It is known for producing Shigaraki ware, including braziers and flower pots. Asamiya in the west is a tea-producing region, and the area also produces rice and vegetables. The remains of Shigaraki Palace are located here. The Shigaraki Kogen Railway runs through the town. In October 2004, it merged with the towns of Minakuchi, Tsuchiyama, Koka, and Konan in Koka County to form Koka City. Area: 164.34 km2 . Population: 14,229 (2003). 滋賀県南部,甲賀(こうか)郡の旧町。大戸(だいど)川の上流域の山地を占める。信楽焼の産で知られ,火鉢,植木鉢などを産する。西部の朝宮は茶の産地。米,野菜も産する。紫香楽宮(しがらきのみや)跡がある。信楽高原鉄道が通じる。2004年10月甲賀郡水口町,土山町,甲賀町,甲南町と合併し,甲賀市となる。164.34km2。1万4229人(2003)。
