An industrial and agricultural state in the central United States. Abbreviated as Ind. or IN. It is part of a large industrial belt on the southern shore of the Great Lakes, and industrial cities such as Gary are concentrated in the northwestern tip of the state, where various industries such as steel, machinery, chemicals, oil refining, and food processing are carried out. It produces coal and cement, and agriculture is also active, with corn being the main product. Livestock is also raised.
