Prose

Japanese: prose
Prose

…A piece of writing that is written with care to follow the rhythmic rules specific to that language and to form lines of poetry. A piece of writing that does not follow this care is called “prose,” but its opposite, “verse,” is in fact the same word as “line of verse.” Even if the rules of rhyme are followed, the characteristic that makes a piece of verse immediately recognizable at first glance is thought to be the rhythm, or rather than the rhyme. …

From [Prose]

…In contrast to a sentence with a fixed form or rhyme, that is, a verse, a sentence that is not bound by a fixed form or rhyme, but is free to change and describes facts concisely. It corresponds to the English word prose, but its origin is the Latin prorsus, which means "straightforward" and "simple." Therefore, the word "prose" is often used to describe something that is dry and banal, as opposed to poetry that is rich in feeling and intonation and full of emotion and vivid images.

【散文】より

…定型や韻律をもった文章,すなわち韻文に対して,定型や韻律にとらわれず,屈折自在で端的に事実を記述する文章をいう。英語のプローズproseにあたるが,その語源はラテン語プロルススprorsusで,〈まっすぐ〉〈平明〉の意である。したがって〈散文的〉といえば,語感や抑揚に富み,感情や心象の躍動に満ちた詩に対して,しばしば無味乾燥で陳腐な事物の形容に用いられる。…
