[Died] July 16, 1953. Guilford, Surrey. A French-born British poet, historian and essayist. Graduated from Oxford University. Naturalized in Britain in 1902. A friend of GK Chesterton, he also wrote from a Catholic perspective. He is best known for his walking travelogue The Path to Rome (1902), which describes the history and scenery of Europe. His other works include the essay collection The Four Men (12), the history book Europe and the Faith (20), History of England (4 volumes, 25-31), the poetry collection The Modern Traveller (1898), and Heroic Poems in Praise of Wine (1932).
