Masamichi Okano - Masamichi Okano

Japanese: 岡野正道 - おかのしょうどう
Masamichi Okano - Masamichi Okano

He was the founder and chief priest of the Kodo Kyodan, a new Lotus Sutra-based religion. In 1918 (Taisho 7), he became a Tendai monk, and later ran an electrical appliance store while still a monk. In 1935 (Showa 10), he joined the Reiyukai with his wife Kimiko (1902-1976) and became a director. In 1936, he founded the Kodokai in Yokohama, and established the doctrine of Jukuyakushobo (the Lotus Sutra). After World War II, in 1946 (Showa 21), he changed the name of the sect to the Kodo Kyodan, and strengthened its ties with the Tendai sect. In 1952, he built the Kodoyama Main Buddha Hall in Torigoe, Kanagawa Ward, Yokohama, as its headquarters, and expanded its reach to the Kanto and Tohoku regions. In 1964, he was awarded the title of Daisojo by Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei. The headquarters is in Torigoe, Kanagawa Ward, Yokohama City. There are 5 temples, 393 teachers, and 159,803 followers (Religious Yearbook, 2014 edition).
