1763‐1825 German novelist. His real name was Johann Paul Friedrich Richter. Born in Unsiedel, a small town in northern Bavaria, he studied theology at the University of Leipzig after the death of his father (a teacher, later a pastor), but gave up continuing his studies due to poverty and returned to his hometown to earn a living as a private tutor. During this time, he anonymously published a collection of satirical sketches, The Lawsuit in Greenland, in 1783, and decided to become a writer. After that, he wrote full-length novels, most of which were biographical in nature. However, even though they were biographical, motifs such as suspended animation, masks, and doppelgangers (alter selves) appear consistently, and pastoral descriptions, comical events, grotesque scenes, and fantastical dreamlike experiences alternate, frequently interrupted by the narrator's comments.
