Dicotyledonous, polypetalous. A climbing herb with tendrils. Leaves are simple or compound, alternate. Flowers are unisexual, monoecious or heteroecious, actinosymmetric. Male flowers have tubular calyx. Corolla is 5 shallowly or deeply lobed, but many are completely lobed (such as in trillium, spurge, and cockle). Stamens are 3-5, separate or fused, one anther is 1-lobed, others 2-lobed, locules are erect or curved. Calyx tube of female flowers is fused to ovary. Ovary is inferior, 3-lobed, lateral placenta. Style is single or 3-lobed, stigma is thick. Seeds are usually flattened, lack endosperm, and store nutrients in cotyledons. There are about 100 genera and 980 species in the world, distributed mainly in the tropics and subtropics, and 17 species in 9 genera grow wild in Japan. Many of them are cultivated for their edible fruits, such as watermelon, pumpkin, and cucumber.

双子葉植物、離弁花類。巻きひげのあるつる性草本。葉は単葉または複葉で、互生する。花は単性で雌雄同株または異株で放射相称。雄花の萼(がく)は筒状となる。花冠は5浅裂ないし深裂するが、全裂するものも多い（カラスウリ、スズメウリ、ゴキヅルなど）。雄しべは3～5本で離生または合着し、1個の葯(やく)は1室、他は2室で、室は直立または屈曲する。雌花の萼筒は子房に合着する。子房は下位で3室、側膜胎座。花柱は単一または3裂し、柱頭は太い。種子は普通扁平(へんぺい)で胚乳(はいにゅう)がなく、子葉に養分を蓄える。世界に約100属980種、主として熱帯、亜熱帯に分布し、日本には9属17種が野生する。スイカ、カボチャ、キュウリなど、果実を食用にするために栽培されるものが多い。
