A city in central Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1906. It occupies the midstream of the Shinano River, the southern Echigo Plain, the Tochio Basin, and the eastern side of the Mishima Hills, and faces the Sea of Japan. During the Edo period, the city center flourished as a castle town for the Makino clan and a river port on the Shinano River. 80% of the castle town was burned down during the Boshin War in 1868, and it also suffered major damage during World War II. It is one of the snowiest areas in the country, but in 1961 the first snow-melting road in the country was completed. It is the central city in the central part of the prefecture, where the Shinetsu Main Line, Joetsu Line, Echigo Line, Joetsu Shinkansen, and Hokuriku Expressway pass through, and the Kanetsu Expressway branches off. In 1982, it was designated as a model district for a technopolis (a city with a concentration of technology), and industries such as electrical equipment, precision equipment, and general equipment are thriving. Wholesale business has been active for a long time. Nagaoka New Town was developed in the hills in the west, and residential development has progressed. The Nagaoka Festival in August is famous for its fireworks. In April 2005, the city incorporated Nakanoshima Town in Minamikanbara County, Koshi Town, Mishima Town, Oguni Town in Kariwa County, and Yamakoshi Village in Koshi County, in January 2006, Tochio City, Teradomari Town, Yoita Town, and Wajima Village in Mishima County, and in March 2010, Kawaguchi Town in Kitauonuma County.
